What is Vitamin B12?
Vitamin B12 is an essential water-soluble vitamin that plays a role in many bodily functions including brain function, DNA production and the creating of red blood cells & nerve cells.
Vitamin B12 also helps your body use fat and carbohydrates to make energy and new protein. Those with a deficiency in Vitamin B12 may therefore start to feel tired and weak due to megaloblastic anaemia.
There are 4 chemical types of Vitamin B12 – known as, Methylcobalamin, Adenosylcobalamin, Cyanocobalamin & Hydroxocobalamin - at Reigate Aesthetics we use Hydroxocobalamin.
Methylcobalamin and Adenosylcobalamin are both naturally occurring coenzymes that are found in food sources. They work collectively in slightly different ways to cover most of your Vitamin B12 needs.
Cyanocobalamin is meanwhile a synthetic form of Vitamin B12 which the body converts into Adenosylcobalamin and Methylcobalamin before it can be used. This is the most common and cost-effective form of Vitamin B12, is most often found in supplements and some fortified foods.
Hydroxocobalamin is the most effective form of Vitamin B12 that is used to treat people with serious deficiencies. It’s is however only available on prescription and is usually administered by intramuscular shot.
